a lot of these problems are literally just made up to mess with students
for example calculating the electrical field generated by some crazy distribution of charge
some of them are good approximations to situations which do occur in the wild
again to use an example from electrodynamics, you can approximate the field between two capacitor plates by assuming the plates are actually two infinite planes, and this gives an okay result if the capacitor plates are relatively large, and it helps you ignore the pesky edge effects in your calculations
