What is it like to be orthodox in america?

Kind of lonely. The only Orthodox you meet are only at your parish. And even most of those were protestants just a few years ago and they just don't view things properly. But, Orthodoxy is literally the only way so I don't feel bad about it. It is supposed to be this bad towards the end.

Catholicism schismed from Orthodoxy, and Protestantism schismed from Catholicism.

There are fewer differences between roman clCatholicism and orthodox Catholicism than you might think.

Case in point - faithful of either can attend mass of other, receive eucharist etc.

Orthodoxy was what Christ started, the Apostles taught. "Catholics"-(technically, they are papal protestants) the Bishop of the west decided he was more important than the other bishops and made a bunch of changes and broke off; starting Roman Catholicism.
Protestants-Martin Luther was tired of the Catholic's bullshit. Instead of coming back to Orthodoxy, he Reformed Protestantism. Now there are close to 40,000 protestant denominations.
Orthodoxy still follows the same thing we have since the beginning. It's literally the only way. In a nutshell

there are no mysteries (eucharist and baptism, etc) outside of Orthodoxy. The similarities are only superficial and we are completely different ecclesiastically. I grew up b roman catholic.
