It is so widely accepted and studied that it used to be taught here in psych 101. People emulate the people they fear as a way of saying, "Don't attack me I'm like you." As a way of illustration many professors would come in chewing gum and watch the number of students coming into class chewing gum increase as time went on before revealing the lesson on the subject. It also has a component of appeasing those seen to be socially superior or those holding power over you. The media conditioning creates exactly that perception. Oddly enough this is also why niggers are used so heavily in advertising. Take door to door sales for example.
