Nothing operates in a vacuum. If you experience massive demographic decline, it fucks up the fundaments of your economy. So you get less people, living in a shittier economy with business infrastructure that is not suited for that. All countries rival and race with each other. If a country becomes weak, other countries will take advantage of that and make it their bitch. Countless examples for that. So while other countries are moving forward, Europe is withering and becoming more and more obsolete on the global stage by the decade. USA and China do take advantage of this, and this is barely even a beginning of this process. Low fertility rates = Europe will be either american or Chinese poor bitch for the next few centuries.

There are probably many reasons, personally my reasons are geopolitucal. Being Finnish, I don't want Russia to get any more stronger.
I also admire Ukrainian nationalistic fighting spirits. I know attacker in this case is extremely demoralized "I don't even wanna be here", but still they're fighting pretty hard considering how outnumbered and badly equipped they were at start.
