He routed out some triple agents that shilled both the Russians and US with phony intel and he was tasked with getting them exposed
He set up a fake name, per instruction from his superiors, and went to investigate internal leaks
He then found the people responsible and fed them the lines of intelligence with trackers built into their leaks....something that would trigger the specific leaker in the US working for both sides to respond and while they were watching they nabbed them
He set up the original feeds of intel and narratives that were marked and profiled, which were later used to bust Israeli spies in the US.
Fact remains he was devout Catholic, and member of Opus Dei. So he was not the type to corrupt himself or his work. His wife found the money he received, which was not that much at the time, and he had spent very little of it all. Plus the media had gone on a rampant attack on his character throughout building an influencial narrative that the intelligence agency was keen to adopt to implicate him and cover any official trails of his actions at their direction.
A National Hero to some.....including his wife, who remains loyal to him.
The way he made the drops was telltale and strategically something he learned to imitate and track. It was merely something that happened at a time when their strength in the US was growing and right before the Sept 11th attacks.
You see the FBI is tasked with investigating any CIA backed intelligence leaks and that is what he was taking down.

If you look at his write up on Wiki they intentionally contradict themselves in the statements in the first paragraph forming an illogical complication in their storyline.
Easy to see that is a story invented to disavow his activities. His supervisor even knew that he was doing this and was reported by one of the other members in his office for shady dealings on their computers, which they believed that it was for downloading info. But after being reported for this serious crime they just maintined their direction. Look who was the director of the FBI at the time and tell me that he is telling the truth throughout any of the stories told about the actual official motives behind all of these affairs.

He was the person that got the Soviets to rat out Aldrich Ames trading them outdated strategies, military dox worth jack shit, and other trivial data that was "official" looking, but this guy is in the FBI
