It was the 70s and the feminist movement was coming on strong. But change needed to be made real change. A problem and a call to action and the alarms were sounded. Women had noticed that only female names were used for hurricanes, implying that women were the cause of all disasters. So they demanded that men's names be added to the list as well and in 1979 a huge victory for women's rights was won.
In 2003 a congressman had noticed something off about those hurricane names. Only white people's names were being used. Lily-white names. So minorities were suddenly up in arms for not being associated with disasters and Sheila Jackson Lee went to battle and fought successfully to end this racial bigotry and that day a huge victory was won for minorities as they began to see names like Katrina and Hugo on the list getting the much-needed representation they so longed for. And what has that changed?
