I understand the importance of the belief of MAD, but when you think about it, MAD doesn't actually make sense. Logically, in the face of a first strike, the defenders most rational option would be to do nothing, as wether he responds or not, he's dead. An a non-response leads to a lesser loss of life. If rationally it makes more sense to not retaliate, that means MAD doesn't actually exist.

I assume all countries know this, but I guess the value comes from countries acting like they believe in MAD, which is what makes it real.

Past a certain point, you have to recognize that all acts of warfare are illogical on some level. The Ukrainians are dying to defend their homeland, and killing Russians in the process, when they could much more easily go to Poland and live better lives in a significantly wealthier nation. This sort of ethical calculus fails because humans generally suck at math, and are more motivated by emotions and loyalties. In this context, MAD would likely occur for the sole reason that we're being attacked and we want to defend ourselves.
