the truth is 99% of people go through life being told about what is real and what is really happening by 'experts'. 99% of experts, same thing. 1% of people can figure out something that they haven't been told or taught. that's what you're talking about with the difference between main characters and NPCs. it has nothing to do with intelligence, success, failure, depression, or mental illness. the 1% will never be satisfied with incorrect explanations, lies, or shortcuts about reality. the real question is whether it is a mental illness to trust 'experts' about the world when they're mostly wrong. also depression is a modern invention that almost exclusively affects NPCs because they depend on someone else solving their problems.
