Everyone expected Ukraine to fold. Think of how Zelenskey was offered asylum by a few different countries merely days into the invasion. Putin’s goal was to reset Ukraine’s government in a quick operation, annex the East and permanently bring Ukraine into the Russian sphere - thus ensuring Russia was a major power for the foreseeable future. In his mind, this would have had the added benefit of further alienating Berlin/Paris from Washington/London. That was literally it and we all expected it to work. The Ukrainians fucked up his plan for long enough for NATO weapons to pour in and public opinion in Europe to dissolve decades of German foreign policy. This whole fiasco has been a dream scenario for the Anglo-Americans.

The goal of large parts of the security services is to create a totalitarian fascist dictatorship in Russia. To do this they needed to isolate themselves from the world and have a reason for crackdowns and loss of all freedoms inside the country.
