Empathy and socializing is what allowed our ancestors to tame the environment and become the dominant species. However, an environmental collapse through scarcity, war, natural disaster, extraterrestrial intervention (an asteroid strike say) could suddenly drop populations to such incredibly low levels in under a few centuries that groupings/corroboration larger than 2-5 families will be super rare. The unique approaches to problem solving in isolation that autistic minds can conjure will allow the species to perpetuate past the catastrophe.
