I'm too lazy to look up the stats but most first-time drug use occurs when someone is drunk and a majority of suicides occur when the person is drunk. We're not even getting into the health effects of drinking.
Alcohol is bad. If it were invented today, modern food and drug laws would not allow it to be sold for public consumption on account of of its harm to the body and addictive potential. But because it's been used since time immemorial, it's grandfathered-in. Prohibition is bad and the decision to not drink needs to be made by people themselves, not the government.
