Akin to what America did after the Revolution. We didn't stop speaking English, but we set our own rules for pronunciation and spelling. I know part of Ukraine speaks Russian and I have no problem with this. It's just a symbolic way of asserting Ukrainian independence from Russian oppression. America didn't stop speaking English post-war, we just changed how we spoke it.
