In my opinion, Lovecraft is the best horror author, I like hybrid works, and his alien works, the dream worlds, terrors of science and the supernatural alike (and together) is fascinating for the mind.
King's attempts at fantasy is clumsy, often shamelessly self-aggrandizing. There's only three out of his eight Dark Tower books are worth picking up. They're worth reading, but the ending was a monument of disappointment.

More recent authors like Clive Barker although he's a bit heavy on perversions. David Moody, Greig Beck.
