Every time you travel distance equal to the length of the circle (i.e. 2π), you return to (1, 0) (i.e. 1 + 0i), and this is only when this happens.

e^(x + yi) = 1 would mean that the length of e^(x+yi) = e^x e^(yi) = 1 which would require e^x = 0 meaning that x = 0. Therefore you only need to search the imaginary axis.
