I mean Gotland is a very strategic island. You could place anti air systems and aircrafts there and so on. Deny the enemy to operate in the baltics, in sea and air. But Russia would only try to invade Gotland if they faced a war with NATO.

Russia can't win so most likely will be a global scale nuclear exchange, after that USA or Russia could try what they did with the Nazisin the Race to Berlin, the battlefields will be the Baltics, Poland, Belaruss, Romania, Ukraine and Scandinavia, after that they'll pact a new Iron Curtain, ofc US could reach Moscow or Russia London but i don't think so.

Russia vs NATO doesn't mean that Russia needs to invade every NATO country. Russia only needs to beat the ones that matter (Germany and France). If Russia can beat those two, while bypassing the rest, then the rest of NATO will be neutralized because they have small militaries and no offensive capabilities.
