just a manufacturing quirk. it's an tooling/molding method for manufacturing. you wouldn't make flimsy plastic/metal parts without filling that gap, it's like $.05 more to create tooling that integrates an open space in the machining and they make a billion emblems each year. it's just some jewish cost savings bullshit.
