I joined out of high school and it was the best and worst decision of my life. I’d recommend it with the caveat that you do something that has transferable skills to the civ/contracting world. Preferably you would go into some sort of comsec, signals, or technical expertise. Lastly, look into roles that require top secret clearance as that will help you on the civilian side when you get out.

Navy vet here. 2000 - 2006. Navy can mean 100 different experiences on which rate you go into. Airman, and Seaman are what I consider the best. Anything technical working with electronics is the way to go when you get out. Worked in Combat Systems, and along side one of the fleets best micro miniature repair shops. Get out and work for Raytheon, Texas Instruments, Lockheed Martin, etc.

Airman really depends on what you're doing, they have their own disposable people too. Anything that relates to engineering part of it or electronics is good. Sub electronics is ass.
