Here's the rub. There will not be a recovery. The development of industrial civilisation requires an easily accessible, abundant source of energy. In the 18th century this was found in the vast coal fields of England and later the surface or near-surface oil deposits of the Caucasus, Arabia and so on. With those depleted the chances of any future civilisation developing the technology to access fossil fuels, and therefore develop to an advanced technological level, is slim to nil. If we bungle it now we will likely be stuck at some pre-industrial level of civilisation forever.
