Instead, make gas prices inversely proportional to one's income. Make it that the less money you earn on income, as well as the less money that a company makes, the more you are are able to get a discount on gas (up to a certain limit in gallons to not abuse this). Wealthy people (making over $100,000 a year) and large corporations don't get gas discounts, since they don't need those.
What could possibly go wrong with this plan, besides everything?
I don't know, maybe a better idea would be companies should be on the hook for fielding transportation costs. That would probably just result in companies opting for work from home, but that's better for the environment, right?
