A lot of them were originally apprentice technicians and draughtsmen. They were then day released to a university to get a degree. Or they had a military background, with a similar amount of hands on experience. All the big employers did this, with a lot of crossover between the grades. My dad joined ICI as an apprentice with no quals and 20 years later ended up doing a maths degree through them
