Today’s mismatches are likely to persist because of structural shifts in the labor market. The relationship between job openings and unemployment has departed from historical trends. In January 2022—two years from the start of the pandemic—the US unemployment rate stood at 4.0 percent, close to its prepandemic level of 3.5 percent. Job openings remained exceptionally high, however, with 10.9 million unfilled positions as of the end of December 2021, compared with 5.9 million in December 2019.
worked construction all through college - nearly started working as an engineer/surveyor actual workers get treated like shit pay isn't very high all things considered - you will get by but you could earn a lot more in any other trade pay is kept low as mexicans and immigrants get hired for dirt cheap. we routinely would have a spanish speaking crew. usually their foreman was bilingual. guys worked hard at least. completely at the mercy of where your jobsite is located. usually you get thrown into a hotel for months on end, working shitty shifts. sometimes you get lucky and can do 4-10 hr shifts or something. little mobility up the chain - even as an engineer your next step would be a project manager or getting moved to an office to do estimating.
you do feel a sense of accomplishment though. At the end of the job, you can point to something and see the tangible results of your labor. That's one of the satisfying things about it. Doesn't really justify the pay though. I was only going to get paid 60k/yr as an engineer when I worked there. Made $14/hr as a laborer. Heavy equipment operators probably got around 60k/yr or so. Not great. Not terrible.

Aging demographics and the shortage of younger workers makes construction perfect for automation. Robots are a long ways from being fully autonomous, but there is a lot of room for creating robots that are essentially smarter and stronger tools that allow experienced workers to be more productive and stay on the job as they get older. Big changes coming in the next decade or two in this regard.

Most deaths were in elderly 65+ retired people- They weren't working to begin with. What did happen was that the minimum-wage shit tier jobs treated people even worse- and those people burned out from working those jobs. Unemployment for a time paid more than they ever made working- but we're not talking a "luxury" wage here either- only $12-15/hr. A mix of decades of depressed wages (pic related); being treated worse than normal thanks to covid, and then your "thanks" being told "by the way, had to make some cuts, you're going to be doing 2x the work for the same pay for now on!". Businesses got Government loans which were forgiven, that were rife with corruption and grift- some "jobs" even now are fake postings to satisfy PPP requirements.
Retail, Restaurants, and labor jobs, all which have poor pay and awful treatment of employees, are the only ones "suffering". White collar was little affected, with some mobility of jobs opening up thanks to boomers retiring. Now with inflation of food and gas costs going up, it's not a labor shortage, but employers forgetting the free market goes both ways- If you want workers, fuck you pay me; simple as. What $60k bought you in 2017 is more like 80k now; and the magical "six figures" is more like 200+ for the same quality of life. Employers are not entitled to have workers work for them at the pay level they want- again, you want people to work for you; pay them, and the problem literally solves itself.
