Russian is more similar to Old East Slavic than Ukrainian is to it. Ukrainians in fact destroyed themselves, while Russians preserved themselves. I understand and sympathize with Russia's reasoning for their intervention, but Ukrainians are a real people with a distinct history. The Cossacks were real. The Kievan Rus were real. They are however very similar to Russians, and ideally there would be less animosity between them.
