Now look at Taiwan. They're an island, so already you're looking at an amphibious invasion. The geography is tropical and mountainous and areas to stage a beachhead are limited. It's a defenders dream. The ROC has been preparing for a PRC invasion since 1959. They're a rich country, even in comparison to European countries, and have up-to-date tech. Their government is fully functional and their military is well-trained and cooperates with the US as well. Essentially, Taiwan makes Ukraine look like a cakewalk in comparison, and the population would be just as unwilling if not more so to tolerate the invaders.
