Problem with gas (in Australia) is that when you liquify it, the price increases. You'd need to double gas prices for it to make any sense. At that point there are cheaper alternatives closer to Europe and the other places where gas is needed.

Problem with shale gas in particular is that it is considered dirty. Not that it matters in central Australia, but it's politics. Shale is fround upon. Another aspect of that is that there is nearly infinite amounts of it all over the world, so anyone who wants control over global trade will be against this.

Could you imagine if Rudd stayed in?
