In our news chronology was like this, Ukrainas started gathering army around Lugansk and Donetsk to wipe them out, Russia called it a bluff and started gathering army of their own around Ukrainian border, they stared at eachother for a week and postured, nobody backed down, shit started. The idea was denazification and demilitarisation, Nazis and majority of army is around DPR and LPR. Russian army went to souround Kiev to relieve some pressure from LNR and DPR so Ukrainians start shifting army north. What do they even get by capuring Kiev? Its a moral blow, enemies in capital boo hoo, but its strategically irrelevant.

Army is not a kindergarten in war people die, when i was serving the army, thank God in peace time 2007 i had most shitiest post in the entire world, i was a border guard, we were explained that in times of war we are first echalon of defense and our duty is to chain the potential invader togheteher with air and artilery support until army can organize effective defense, meaning if somebody attacked chance of survival of my unit is maybe 5-10%. We won according to the objectives that Putin laid out at the start: denazification (achieved after the first two weeks), disarmament (Ukraine will not join NATO and only have a small peacekeeping NATO force on their territory), and the capture of some outlying regions which were threatening to Russia directly.
Show me one fucking source that says that Russia planned to absorb the whole of Ukraine and take the likes of Kiev or Mariupol. You can't, because there fucking aren't any.
