If Putin didn't want Kiev, then maybe he shouldn't have committed the strongest elements of his army to the area around Kiev at the outset of the war.

He absolutely did want Kiev, in order to make Ukraine surrender and make it a short war, but his army stalled due to supply issues and desertion and now he's having to scale back his demands.

Problem is Putin is not going to allow a bombing of Odesa as it happened in Mariupol. In his Imaginarium that would be worse than wiping out the rest of Europe.

If Russians were smart they should have split Ukraine like this, a long time ago and have a Galician state and a Malorussian state that would essentially be like Belarus. A Russian Empire without Kiev is a fucking joke.

From our point of view, it would be a disaster either way, as having a common border with Russia is a major security threat. It was vital for our interests to have Ukraine as a large buffer state.

Kharkiv (city, and thus oblast) isn't falling for a month even after being encircled, and it isn't going to be encircled for at least 2 weeks
Zaporizhia (region) is mostly already taken but the city itself isn't falling quickly either.

The problem is, the Russians tried to encircle the city quickly in the first few days of the war, only to overextend their supply lines and get their vehicles picked off in obscene numbers. Then their offensive stalled short of an encirclement, and now they're slowly but surely losing ground, village by village, along the western bank of the Dnieper river.

If that were true - which it is not - it came at the cost of thousands of Russian lives and enormous losses in terms of tanks and armored vehicles, as well as waves of demoralization and desertion throughout the Russian army.

What? Russia used less men than Ukraine. Russians are outnumbered. And I am not counting the civilians nor the voluntaries (they are useless in combat but I Guess they have contributed a lot to logístics). Ucranians also have the best weapons the west can offer. Its not surprising It was not a Happy walk for the russians. No army would have done better.
