How long until we get an East Ukraine and a West Ukraine? Divided in two with one side for the west the other for Russia.
Would this work in the end?

Never because Russia will go bankrupt, undergo a coup after that a civil war and then balkanize.
How both areas voted.
More likely Russia will try to take everything east of the Dniepr river. This would be the buffer zone against NATO that Russia wants.

Something like this. It would give a buffer zone along the entire Russian border, and the Dniepr river is a natural barrier in case of any war with NATO.

The real difference is that Ukrainians are allowed to vote and Russians aren't. Fuck off.

putin will have to nuke ukraine to keep that much territory. I think that is a risk putin is unwilling to take.
Putin will have to pull back to crimea and dpr, because his army is getting wrecked.
west is way too big.
To reach Odessa the Russians would need to cross several wide rivers or go far upstream where the crossings are narrower. It would be a major operation. If they have forces to spare I'm sure they'll do it, however I don't think it is a priority compared to the east. They can easily deny use of the port to Ukraine through a blockade. Maybe the Russians will have to take the entire south in order to prevent Ukraine from firing anti-ship missiles into the Black Sea to spoil Russia's maritime trade.
