They are similar in many ways, but they're polar opposites in terms of geography and Russia has a much stronger sense of national identity, than the Spanish empire had, which was mostly held together by the Catholic church. I think a slow decay and withdrawal, like the Byzantine empire is more realistic if it is indeed all downhill from here.
