The United States must do more than issue sanctions and economic penalties against Russia. US leaders should be marshaling an international coalition of the willing, readying military forces to drive out Putin from Ukraine. If Russia prevails again, we will remain stuck in a crisis not just over Ukraine but about the future of the global order far beyond that country’s borders. Left unrestrained, Putin will move swiftly, grab some land, consolidate his gains, and set his sights on the next satellite state in his long game to restore all the Warsaw Pact's pre-1989 borders, the sphere of geographical influence he deems was unjustly stripped from Great Russia.
Once Ukraine has been dealt with, America should turn its attention to Russia. It will probably not be possible to remove Putin quickly without a NATO invasion and occupation--though it will hardly require half a million men, since Putin's army is much diminished since the Cold War, and we will probably have plenty of help from the Russian people, once they trust that we intend to finish the job this time.
Once we have deposed Putin, we can impose an American-led, international regency in Moscow, to go along with the one in Kiev. This may turn out to be one of those hinge moments in history--events like the storming of the Bastille or the fall of the Berlin Wall--after which everything is different. If the occupation goes well, it may mark the moment when the powerful antibiotic known as democracy was introduced into the diseased environment of Eastern Europe, and began to transform the region for the better.
For the United States, this represents perhaps the last, best chance to do what it has singularly failed to do since WW2--to provide Eastern Europe with imperial oversight. It is not entirely America's fault, but our mismanagement and misconceptions have allowed a backward, insignificant nation to become arguably the main threat to the security of the United States and the entire West.

I don't know, Ukraine seems just fine just with your toys+foreign volunteers; if Ukraine would agree to give Crimea, Doncaster and Luganda the conflict would be resolved by now. Ukraine has ambition to completely remove invaders tho, meaning they feel they have much better position in negotiations.
