Russia is winning, but at much greater cost than anticipated and they have shown that they do not have the infrastructure to replace that Soviet tech with modern designs (just look at the procurement of the Armata platform, their complete lack of MPADS or the fact that they are still using strategic bombers from the 1950s while even Ukraine has updated to a more recent aircraft).

Fragmentation/explosive force from grenade/mortar/shelling/NLAW rockets + body armor = mostly wounded in exposed areas. It was the same with our guys and body armor. You survive but exposed parts of the body are obviously going to remain vulnerable. Sniper fire also means enemies are looking to wound one and occupy your squad mates, since wounded but not dead neutralizes two soldiers minimum instead of just one.
