you didnt raise self esteem, you raised group expectations. when expectations are not met, self esteem obviously falls. race relations are harmed by policies like affirmative action (obama/jackson) because people who are not qualified are presented as if they are qualified--for people which are actually not qualified for tasks, the belief they are qualified is a false belief that leads to negative life outcomes (mental illness).
in this way, conservatives refer to victims of liberal policies (liberals) as having metal illness. liberalism is a mental disorder (false beliefs / negative life outcomes).

It was one of the big culminations of the liberal project. Unfortunately having a 'black' government while at the same time most blacks can't maintain a coherent peaceful society in american cities creates a massive, unavoidable contradiction.
So you either face the contradiction and realize we are not all literally equal and rational blank slates, or create a new religious-like structure and double down on it. (something similar is happening on a world scale with failures of the liberal project in south africa, afghanistan, etc)

Obama only made an existing problem worse. For decades blacks have built up their own "culture" in their communities. Instead of trying to promote cohesion by breaking down cultural barriers, he promoted the dindu nuffin mindset that we see propagated today. Now, whether or not blacks could have integrated more closely into the United States is up for debate. Regardless, the fact is the first (and probably last) black president didn't even try to promote excellence in his people. He just made excuses for them like everyone else.

It had nothing to do with electing a black president. Race relations was okay since like the 70s. People were pretty much judged by the content of their character, with blacks even given a bit of an advantage for affirmative action. Michael Jordan, Oprah Winfrey, Neil degrasse Tyson, obviously Obama, there was no major racism going on.
Then came occupy wallstreet. Regular people sick of the 1% taking everything, bank bailouts, lobbying, all that shit. Normal people from every side coming together against the 1%, progressives, libertarians, tea partyers, ect. Then the glow niggers had to come up with a new narrative to split this alliance of the 99%ers. Social justice, institutional racism. Now judging by the content of one's character is racist. Everything bad that black people do, and everything bad that happens to them is white people's fault, because the entire western world created by Europeans aka whites is inherently racist.
