You're mostly correct but the largest motivator is the inability to acquire enough diesel to keep the fake "economic activity" plates spinning. Russia is going for Ukraine because they know most refineries re-tooled to process cheap russian heavy oil years ago. So they effectively have Europe by the short and curlies now. just search "diesel shortage" and you'll see just how close to collapse western europe really is.
