The Frenchies' map seems to imply Russia is slowly making its way up the Dniepr and are close to encircling in the Donbas.
I feel like I would see a lot more noise about that from other sources if it was happening.
Right now there's definitely fog of war going on - Chernihiv near Kyiv is supposedly surrounded by Russians but Ukraine is apparently doing well around Kyiv, in Sumy and is moving closer to Kherson. Also suggested Russia has a bunch of forces around Izyum but unclear how much of a grip they have and if they can even try to encircle given their difficulties.

I know it's retarded, for the very reasons you listed. The only explanation is that they hate their enemy so much that it makes them irrational. But I can't comment on what people think or feel. probably for the better. Russians being the restrained good guys, is good. Imagine if russia didnt fight with kid gloves and just bombed everything to the ground like the media says they do. No tip toeing around cities with civilans you dont want to kill, just level everything and move on. Yet russia is simulatinously portraied as blood thirst who wants to kill all the civies, and at the same time they seem to be real keen on not just leveling the cities to the ground because thats the safest for them and fastest way to deal with an enemy in an urban environment.
