On a Diesel submarine you'd have to surface at least every few days to recharge batteries and, due to power consumption of O2 systems, to refresh the air within, since they would kill the electric batteries if operated constantly.

user the issue with stealth submarines lies not in what type of engine is has, but the type of prop it has.
Subs have propellers or impellers. When propeller turns in water, it produces something called cavitation. Cavitation is small bubbles which form on the prop then immediately collapse under the water pressure of the ocean. When these bubbles do this, is produces a signature acoustical spectrum, as well as other vibrations which can be analyzed.
Building s stealth sub requires generating as little noise and subsequently as little cavitation as possible. The solution is to move very slowly which isn't ideal because stealth subs are expensive as fuck and you want them out doing as much work as possible.
