The 1st amendment was meant to be applied on public forum and in modern times most of that public forum doesnt happen in the public town square but on sites like Twitter and Facebook who are censoring one side. The government should intervene in these big tech companies to make sure free speech is respected because the founding fathers intended that the place where most dialogue happens not to be censored for their views. Twitter isn’t a government entity. They have no obligation to allow free speech on their platform. This is what the Right wanted though. They wanted corporations to have this level of power. Kinda sucks that it didn’t work out how they expected, but I don’t feel sorry for them.

I unironically think government entities use platforms like Twitter and YouTube as proxies to work their way around the 1st amendment and censor/manage the population. Not only that, but they use these platforms to subvert and influence the populations of other countries. When you have a platform that has millions and sometimes billions of users, the way these platforms are managed becomes a matter of national security. No doubt in my mind the government is at the very least overseeing the inter workings of these social media platforms.

The US and European governments along with corporations which include the media and tech companies do not want free speech as free speech is a direct threat to the control the government and corporations can have over society. Buying twitter would not fix what are structural problems in society itself that government and corporations fear being exploited

I don’t care if they aren’t part of the government. If you create a platform that becomes the de facto town square then you have to deal with the consequences of that reality. Those being that you don’t get treated as a private company and have now taken up the mantle of upholding the ideals of the society you are public forum to, willingly or not.
