The DNR and LNR at the start of the war controlled about 1/4 to 1/3 of the entire Donbass region, as of now, a slim majority of Donetsk is occupied and almost the entirety of Luhansk is occupied by pro-Russian forces.
Ukraine supposedly has 40-60k troops in their part of Donetsk.
Russia is saying they plan on dislodging or destroying that 40-60k group.
