They were funded by CIA. At some point they literally fought with the CIA in a border skirmish. They used human shields and false flag attacks all the time.

It was literally a criminal enterprise not far off from Azov and the Serb state couldn't do anything about it other than go full nationalist and start defending their territory. A lot of criminals on the Serb side took advantage and executed innocents as a result.

I'm of the opinion that all sides in that conflict were terrible, NATO just picked one of them to go after and called it a day. In the end, all they did was contribute to even more bloodshed. The genocides may have stopped for now, but the seeds of yet another one have definitely planted for the future.
