In the 90th West could freely rob Russia for resources, companies etc. - but Putin started to put end for this, dealing with some oligarchs, nationalizing oil/gas industry, ending the deals reached through corruption.
At his point west became hostile to Russia since it coudnt anymore funnel money from it as easy, and thus started preparing regime change and by any means isolating and weakening it, up to supporting terrorrists, creating instability in ex-ussr by coups etc.
