GamerGate is the event where a jilted boyfriend exposed his ex (Zoe Quinn) for sleeping with journalists for positive reviews. What followed was baffling as the entire media came down hard on the people saying that 'sleeping with journalists for favourable reviews is bad'. What was more insane was the fact that Any Forums was literally destroyed (moot made it unable for anyone to post, filled it with nigger dicks and had cuckold audio playing in the background), reddit deleted thousands of posts (if I remember right, it was something ridiculous like 200,000). The mainstream media started reporting on it as sexism and even terrorism.
What followed was the discovery of a paper trail linking games journalists to mainstream journalists, where they had an online community that shared information and received orders so as to more effectively influence opinion. This is why we see all the newspapers put out more or less the same stories, even when they are small and relatively obscure events. This is also why we saw every gaming journalist announce that 'gamers are dead' shortly after at the exact same time.
The paper trail linked to 'common core', 'DiGRA', the US government, the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation, and various outwardly socialist 'think tanks'. They were trying to influence future opinions through video-games (as well as education, hence common core, and countless other mediums). It went all the way to the top, and so it got an insane reaction that no one could initially understand.
This event sparked the true birth of the alt-right. Prior to that normal fags didnt belie in a grand conspiracy of governments and other organizations pushing a Marxist agenda on the masses. This event proved to everyone involved - which was a lot of people - that Uncle Any Forums was right.
