We did that in 1918. We literally sent troops to help the white Russians. It was probably closed to Mariupol too. But we almost immediately retreated sadly.
There are worse ones in terms of casualties but in terms of loss of prestige and respect I'm struggling to think of anything post-WWII that's close.
