It has always been the Russian government's position that the entire purpose of this operation was to secure the Donbass region and the Donbass region alone. All other objectives are secondary. Along the way, we discovered that there were biolabs that were producing chemical weapons, and they got shut down. We have been attacking Kiev and other regions and cities within Ukraine as part of a general de-nazificiation strategy, to lure out and destroy azov. That objective has been mostly achieved. We never intended to take Kiev or any region other than Donbass and there is no evidence that that was ever the objective.
It is frankly pathetic the amount of shills on here who repeat blatant falsehoods about the overwhelming success of the current operation and strategy. We may have said in the past or shown by our actions that we wanted to take Kiev. Russian tactics look disjointed and attrition-like, but that is to the untrained eye. People that know about military tactics know that such actions are intended to confuse and bewilder the enemy. Whilst we engaged the enemy on their territory, they were distracted and we could focus on Donbass, our only military objective.
Now that we have succeeded in de-nazification plank of the campaign, we can now focus on securing Donbass region, which is our only actual objective.
Russia is not engaged in failed nation building like America in Iraq or Afghanistan. Building a liberated Ukraine from scratch with so many nationalists would be very difficult anyway: it is not something we ever wanted.

I imagine it like in Stellaris. After you defeat the main force, you are free to roam the enemy territory and pickup the smaller fleets. Only stopping points are planets (cities) which must be properly bombarded before you can send xenomorphs (chechens).

I haven't really been paying attention lately, but it was always my assumption that the goal in ukraine was to take the donbass, maybe take everything east of the dniper river so they have a natural defense on their western border, and level ukraine's military and industrial infrastructure. It seems that russia has more or less achieved all those goals already and the only thing left is cleaning up the ukrainian forces that they've kettled east of the dnieper.
This'll probably be wrapped up by the end of next month, and western ukraine will be devestated economically by all the damage to infrastructure, as well as losing their ports, as well as losing all the manpower from refugees who aren't coming back.. Part of the peace talks will probably involve international observerrs to prevent western ukraine from militarizing again or recieving arms shipments from the west.
So russia gains a lot of territory, ukraine as a political and economic entity ceases to exist, and western ukraine becomes moldova 2.0 except more irrational.

Over a month in they have only taken some rural villages in the Donbas (northern Luhansk and southern Donetsk). No major Donbas cities have been taken. No kotel has been formed.
Everywhere else Russia is losing territory. Ukraine has of course lost some military infrastructure and equipment. But NATO is giving Ukraine effectively infinite supplies. It will be easy to rebuild.
