Kherson and Zapahazoria are the bare minimum, as that gives Russia a land bridge to Crimea and a foothold across the Dnieper river, which makes it a much less effective strategic barrier in future wars. You also troll them by controlling 20% of the Ukrainian national electrical generation capacity.
I think the Romanians are the more plausible culprits.

Depends on how much they're willing to commit into this. The Kremlin seems to unironically think this is a special operation and not an invasion, hence why Strelkov was seething about them not mobilizing the full 2 million man army.
I don't think it's realistic that they could occupy with such a small ground force. Especially when the most zealous battalions (separatists) seem to have taken the hardest losses. Their goal was to demilitarize Ukraine, so focusing on the 70k concentration of troops in Donbass was a natural next step.
It's just, I don't understand how they could be content with just doing that. Demilitarized Ukraine could remilitarize (see 2014-2022). Pro Russian sentiment within Ukraine was effectively stifled for 8 years, so what guarantees to they have to this shit not happening again on an even bigger scale in the coming years?

Only taking Donbass and such after all this effort is untenable. Putin is going to go for most of Ukraine and I think the west will be lucky to have a demilitarized zone in the west that includes Lvov After this offensive removes the remaining bulk of the Ukrainian army I'm not sure what else there is left to stop Russia from going all the way to the Polish border. Russia will bypass Kiev and let it starve while securing clay. Which is why I think the US is telling Zelensky to get a deal now.

I can't believe how easily people here fall for disinfo. Nothing in the original Russian Interfax article contained phrases of "scale back" or "we never wanted Kiev anyway", it's talking about how storming the cities is not the first plan of action at Kiev/Kharkov because of the casualties/infrastructure damage that it involves. He stated that while this could change in the future, in the meantime the Russian military is focusing their efforts on the Donbass region and the war can move into a second phase (likely due to Mariupol liberation freeing up a lot of personnel). All the phrases of "scale back" or "revise" etc. were added by western journos desperate for a propaganda win - the official stated position of "we didn't want to annex Ukraine" was repeated constantly during the early days of the war even as troops were knocking on the doors of Kiev/Kharkov, just like how it's officially a "special military operation" and not a war or invasion, so don't read too much into the official statements. Frankly disappointed by people here who believed the western propaganda without even bothering to check or think.
Probably because they put troops near Kiev and Nikolaev. They can't interpret this as anything other than a sign that Russia intended to physically invade and occupy all of Ukraine.
