Donbass and southern Ukraine (aka the areas that Russia wanted to annex in the first place) are mostly populated by Russian-speaking people, are the most industrialized and resource-rich areas of the country, and also have some of the most fertile soil in the world. There's a reason why Ukraine was so adamant about never letting it go, unlike Crimea which is basically useless beyond Sebastopol.
