From my understanding that was the point. A significant portion of the soviet people where crammed 20 to a house or homeless. The most efficient way to house all of those people is through mass production of apartments. The big block apartment buildings are the command economy equivalent of the capitalist suburb. Suburbs also lack any architectural beauty.

It's impossible to live in one, you have 7 apartments living on one floor, you hear them walking in the middle of the night, you hear their fucking toddler crying right in your fucking ear, them slamming their door as your apartment shakes,the elevators are so old you can potentially die in one. Living in an apartment complex sucks, but living in a soviet one sucks twice as hard
