They fought WW1 together with Fronce and Britain.
They fought WW2 initially together with Germany, then together with America.
Now they are however alone and it seems that it's much harder to fight alone.

It has nothing to do with that. It is mainly because:
1. Demoralized corrupt military in which popular and effective generals are seen as threats to the mafia-state and removed before they get to powerful.
2. An primarily artillery based force that isn't being allowed to simply level cities to the ground because the PR would be even worse.
3. Corruption in arms manufacturing has probably created a quality control problem and embezzlement.

Also, when Russia fought Napoleon the only reason Russia did well was because they literally ran away and harassed Napoleon on his maneuvers like mongoloid horse archers. Fortunately that tactic resulted in tons of Russian dead because horse tactics don't transfer 1:1 with infantry.

They are doing quite well actually, maybe your question is why they didn't do better? If we mean with better an overwhelming victory.
There are many issue.
1- they really believe in the denazification, therefore they did not expect any kind of collaboration with Kievan regime from local police force, civilians and other istitutions and organizations with ethnic Russian.
2- the first forces did not know they were gonna invade Ukraine, it was just an exercitation for them, (in contemporary age this is how you put your men in action, even with other type of actions, like terrorist attacks, when you have a tip-off you place the SWAT nearby in standby as "exercitation") that caused low morale and bad logistics in certain columns, but overall they did quote well.
First days were a complete success.
3- the Kievan regime doesn't give a crap of locals, therefore use civs as meat shield. Ukraine army take position inside residentials areas forcing civilian out of the top floors and forcing who lives in the bottom one to remain (of they try to run they get a bullet if they are males because muh disertion).
4- Russian army is doing it's best to avoid civilians death caused by fire and by caresty. They tries always to evaquate civilians and to supply them with food and meds. That requires a lot of efforts from the army. The majority of soldier are not doing actual fights but they help locals.
5- Russian army did not except such resistance. It is an obvious defeat for Ukraine army therefore soldiers should surrender. Why they don't? Propaganda and fear. Soldiers see how POWs are threated by them and they don't want to be tortured like they torture Russians neither a they want to be killed by their colleagues when they suggest surrender (what many Ukrops do).

Armoured vehicles, helos, and jets are the french heavy cavalry, drunk hohols with NLAWS and drones are english longbowmen. It's over, you can't take over a country that has access to these technologies anymore. Warfare has changed again like it always does.
