It's just pandering to what women want. They will gravitate to anything that makes them feel or look pretty. It's that simple, I think. The make up industry has been huge for a long time for the same reason.
It's all very unhealthy though and gives unrealistic images of people and expectations. When we had the media airbrushing and then photoshoping it added another layer of impossible expectations and unreality. This is just the new layer on top of that for our post-truth age.
