Sport recruiting has always been a very competitive profession. I find that the UPenn women's swim coach is somewhat of a trendsetter - a Mark Zuckerberg if you will - with regard to women's athletics. He is getting in on the ground floor of this clearly lucrative approach to athletic performance.
When I was a student there, I really grew into my body by the time I was working on my graduate degree. Standing at 6'3, 200 lbs. and with a 7' wingspan + 250 lb lat pulldown for reps, despite having no rowing experience, the men's rowing coach approached me at the gym inquiring whether I was a freshman or sophomore. He was disappointed to find out that I was actually 23 at the time and about 2 years into my PhD so I couldn't qualify for the team.
This coach was clearly incompetent and lacked the ability to 'think outside the box'. If he had me identify as a 18-year-old woman, he would have a #1 rowing team instantly. But alas, not everyone can be successful as the true savants of sports recruitment such as the swim coach.

Even physicality aside, men have faster reflexes and a better instinct for competitive activities. Even e-sports are dominated by men, and e-sports isn't segregated.

William Thomas can swim for 4 years in college. Does Lia Thomas also get 4 years of eligibility. As far as i know… William no longer exists, cannot be mentioned, so Lia is effectively a new and separate person.
