I think you're severely underestimating American gun nuts though. There are more than a few thousand Americans who are better armed than many nations. The American civilian weapon stockpile is breathtaking when you look at the numbers of people who own 10+ guns.
Also the cartels have been armed with American weapons and partially have been provided those weapons(and monetary support) through American intelligence agencies attempting to destabilize our Southern neighbors . I would not expect that support to continue in the event of an invasion

A an invasion of Mexico? If we're going to do it, we might at as well do it now. Because current training doctrine is still focused on counter insurgency. We are switching back to conventional in case of conflict with the Russians, N. Koreans, and or the Chinese. That doesn't mean we'd wouldn't be able to take Mexico though. But it would mean more casualties in a Mexican conflict if the new NCO and officer corps are retrained towards conventional warfare. Mexico effectively doesn't have a military. So eliminating it wouldn't be a problem. The problem would be a partisan insurgency that could easily reach anywhere inside the United States that could be funded or instigated by Russian or Chinese political forces. Obviously, the big elephant in the room is the large US population of Mexicans. And, where would the refugees and displaced go? Certainly they would go north. How many? During the first war, the populations were 7 million to 20 million. Now, its over 100 million. Going by the average number of people recent insurgencies have displaced, per conflict and years, you're talking about at least 5 million on the lowest extreme end and up to 15 million on the high end.
However, we could go in there and just fuck up their central government, install our own and skedaddle quickly out of there. But then it would immediately become an open narco state that would cause instability and violence in the Southwest. It could also open it up to groups bankrolled and sympathetic to China or their ideology. If we go in, we'd have to go all in and finish it. Honestly, I don't even know if we'd have the money for that.

I've watched some documentaries recently and they seem to be better armed than regular US soldiers.
