It’s actually true that there was a cannibalism “outbreak” in central Russia during the first Soviet famine (1921-1922). Well documented as there were survivors who did interviews later and spoke on it. There was an interview with a Doctor referenced in the book that was corroborated by several other sources where the doctor said that after the famine was over and eating human meat was no longer necessary, he started getting inexplicable cravings for human flesh. Many of the survivors who were literate and able to write about their experience reported the same thing. Tried to do some more research on this to find out what would cause that but had no luck
