House prices rise 20% in February, but fewer homes change hands Housing March 22, 2022
House prices continue to rise, increasing just over 20% in February compared with February a year ago, national statistics agency CBS said on Tuesday. The increase is marginally down on that of January, when a 21.1% increase was recorded. That was the biggest rise since the CBS began keeping records in 1995. House prices have been rising steadily since June 2013 when they hit a low during the financial crisis. Compared with then, prices have risen nearly 92%. At the same time, the number of transactions continues to decline, due to the shortage of homes for sale. Just over 14,000 flats and houses changed hands in February, down 17% on February 2021, the CBS said.

‘Fascist’ statue removed from outside Olympic stadium in Amsterdam
A statue of a sportsman has been removed from the entrance to Amsterdam’s Olympic stadium because of its fascist connotations. The Van Tuyll monument, a bronze figure with an outstretched right arm, dates from 1928 – the year Amsterdam hosted the Olympics – but had attracted criticism because of its resemblance to the Nazi salute. Earlier this year the statue was daubed with red paint and the slogans ‘fuck Nazis’ and ‘fascists die’ written on the wall of the stadium behind it. Although the statue predates the rise of Adolf Hitler, further research found that the Olympic salute introduced in 1924 was used by Italian fascist dictator Benito Mussolini after he seized power in 1922. The stadium’s authorities had already taken steps to move the statue to a less prominent location inside the stadium, but the Stichting Cuypersgenootschap, a conservation organisation for historic buildings, objected to the city council’s decision to license the move. A judge still has to rule on whether the statue, which is a listed monument, should be permanently moved.

Vrouw probeert levende kip mee cel in te smokkelen Een 27-jarige inwoonster van de gemeente Berkelland is maandag aangehouden, omdat ze nog een gevangenisstraf van zeven maanden had openstaan. De vrouw had echter een wel erg opvallende kamergenoot meegenomen naar het cellencomplex in Borne: een kip.

Bij het openen van de tas keek ‘een levendige kip’ de agenten aan. De vogel is in beslag genomen, omdat het niet is toegestaan huisdieren te houden in de gevangenis.
De vrouw werd eerder op de dag aangehouden vanwege een nog openstaande celstraf van ruim zeven maanden. Onbekend is waar uit de gemeente Berkelland de vrouw precies vandaan komt en waarom de gevangenisstraf nog openstond
